Janine antoni lick and lather
Is it possible to touch something with sight, to feel something deeply in a total state of awareness? For Janine Antoni, creative process takes on a psychological disposition. She creates objects with an intense admiration of life, in which her body is your vehicle, a fulcrum of perception, in which senses are enabled through corporeal textures. Phenomenologically speaking, Antoni would like you to feel her body and to understand where your body is in relation to gestures frozen into forms of loving care. She does not see the body as a mere vehicle for the mind; instead, she hopes the body feels before the mind takes over. Listening to her, I felt more in tune with the dance of what it really means to appreciate sculpture.

Josefina Ayerza To resume again Janine Antoni became indeed a fairy tale when she set foot in the Venice Biennale's Aperto , an exhibition committed to emerging juveniles, the year , with her Lick and Lather made up of 14 portrait busts, cast of a model of herself and mounted on look-a-like ancient classical pedestals. Seven statues were cast in white soap, and the other seven in brown chocolate, and then reshaped by the rather subjective acts which engaged her tongue passing over, and the frothing up of bubbles, fizz, effervesce, foam-in one statue, the features were completely erased. In parallel rows, the sculpture made a strong impression, till you were confronted with another strong sensual verdict, or the distinctive, yet typically pleasant smells, of soap, of chocolate With Janine Antoni "we are at a time when all kinds of artistic languages are possible, and minimalism is one of the languages available. I've also used expressionism-in my performance in London, Loving Care , and even 19th century classicism, in Lick and Lather. I'm interested in everyday body rituals and converting the most basic sort of activities eating, bathing, mopping into sculptural processes.

Woman’s Work: The Epic Two Decades of Janine Antoni
Utilizing her body as her primary tool, Janine Antoni makes work that blurs the distinction between performance art and sculpture. She reshaped her image by licking the chocolate and washing the soap. In , for her work she bathed in a bathtub that was used as a water trough from which cows drank. When the picture was taken it appeared as if Antoni was nursing the cow, bringing their relationship full circle.
Contemporary artist Janine Antoni created the original sculptures in from molds of her own head. Then she licked the chocolate bust down until its features became indistinct, and took the soap bust into the shower with her, letting water slowly erode its features. The goal of licking and washing the busts, says Antoni, was to highlight the conflicted, but intimate, relationship that many people have with their surface appearance. But the busts also offer another commentary. Antoni created the busts to be shown at the Venice Biennale , an international cultural exposition.
